Best Time to Visit Tanzania – Optimal Seasons for Safari & Tourism

Tanzania has more than 20 national parks, conservation areas, game reserves, UNESCO World Heritage sites, natural wonders, archaeological sites, an archipelago, the Great Rift Valley, the Great Wildebeest Migration, the tallest mountain in Africa, and the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world.

It also has a rich history and culture, including indigenous tribes like the Hadza and Datoga. Tanzania offers a wide range of adventures and a true African safari experience.

This brings up the question: When is the best time to visit Tanzania? Like many others, I would say the dry season from July to October is the best time to visit.

First, this season matches the annual Wildebeest Migration, which attracts many tourists to Tanzania. Second, the dry season is cooler and less wet.

After all, who wants to be on a Zanzibar beach holiday during heavy rains?

With so many tourist attractions and activities in Tanzania, the best time to visit depends on your interests, preferences, and the activities you want to do.

Now, let’s look at the best time for safaris in Tanzania.

The Long Dry Season (June to October)

This is the peak tourist season. Most days are dry and sunny, making it pleasant to travel between national parks. The dry, sparse vegetation makes it easier to see animals during game drives.

The weather is also good for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with clear skies, and warm enough for beach holidays in Zanzibar.

The highlight of the dry season is the Great Wildebeest Migration. You can see this amazing event if you visit Serengeti during this time. You can also enjoy hot air balloon safaris and guided nature walks in Tanzania’s national parks.

Keep in mind, this season is busy and prices are higher because many tourists visit.

The Wet Season (March to May, November to February)

This season has two parts: the short rainy season from November to February and the long rainy season from March to May. It is the low tourist season.

If you want to see the wildebeest calving season, which starts the annual migration, visit the short grass plains in the Southern Serengeti during the short rains in January and February.

Bird watchers should consider visiting Tanzania during the wet season. Tanzania’s national parks have many bird species.

During this season, migratory birds arrive and add to the resident birds, making it a great time for bird watching.

You can start your birding from the alkaline crater lakes, then visit the woodlands, rainforests, and wetlands.

If you want to avoid crowds and have a more private wildlife safari, the wet season is best. It is also better for travelers on a budget because prices are lower.

Although the plants look green and fresh during the wet season, the tall, thick grasses make it harder to spot animals.

I would advise against traveling during the long rainy season. The heavy rains can cause cancellations of activities, and the roads in national parks can become muddy and slippery.

When planning your trip to Tanzania, think about the weather, the activities you want to do (like climbing Kilimanjaro, bird watching, game drives, or beach holidays), the places you want to visit, and your budget.

This will help you make the most of your time and safari experience in Tanzania.
